Open Ocean Project Final Project - BioMedia Spring Week 10

My group consists of Sarai, Jullian, Mia, and myself. Each of us were assigned different tasks in order to create a holistic project. Here are examples of each, sound, images, code, video, and then the final project.

During this process I assisted with data collection which were collected through the NASA website. I then took the data collected on Ocean Mass, Ocean Temperature, and Rise in Sea Level. I put these numbers in Max MSP and transcoded them into notes and frequencies. I then recorded the sounds and took them into Ableton and added instruments and effects. I passed the transcoded musical data onto Jullian who then put them in her processing sketch, which Mia then compiled into a video that Sarai provided illustrations for.

Prosthetic Project Finale - BioMedia Spring Week 7

Title: Enhanced Ear (EE)

Description: The Enhanced Ear is designed in the shape of a nautilus shell and also is a loose representation of the inner ear. The Enhanced Ear is programmed to vibrate at different pitches that distinguish temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure. When these factors change dramatically the pitch will change as the environment shifts around it.

Inspiration for (Re)Design - BioMedia Spring Week 3

#1. Spinoloricus Cinziae

“To date, this tiny microscopic organism is the only member of the animal kingdom known not just to survive, but thrive in a completely oxygen-free (anoxic) environment.” - https://earthlyuniverse.com/10-animals-live-extreme-environments/

#2. Snailfish

The record-breaking fish is the deepest one ever found, so deep in fact that the animal would bloat up and rupture if it were to swim to the surface. It’s a sobering thought that we all came from fish, yet this so-far unnamed species lives in an environment that would kill us in a fraction of a second." - https://earthlyuniverse.com/10-animals-live-extreme-environments/

#3. Luna Moth

“As with many other silk moths Luna Moths do not feed as adults. The food/energy for its adult stage is stored while it is in the caterpillar stage of life. Therefore the Luna Moth does not have a proboscis (the long slender mouthpart) that is found on many other moths and butterflies.” - https://www.clemson.edu/extension/publications/entomology/beneficial-insects/luna-moth-bb07.html

SP18 - EDPX 5100 – Grad Critique – Week 6

It is the middle of the quarter and so far I have pushed myself to try so many new things that it has been a challenge but also it has been rewarding. I have been wanting to experiment with making original content through games and music. I have been too afraid to do so in the past, only scratching the surface and creating a game with Twine, https://some-femme.itch.io/this-is-you

This goal by the end of the quarter is to create a fully functional game is Unity! I would like to incorrporate these terrains below and 3D print them to attach to an external object that would act as a wearable interface.

I recently visited home and was inspired by the landscape and the mystery of the desert.

I believe with all of these elements I will be able to achieve my end of the quarter goals!

SP18 - EDPX 5100 – Grad Critique – Week 7 (Exploratory Work #2)

I decided to explore Unity, a game making engine. I have never experienced working with Unity because it was intimidating. I decided since I had the opportunity to explore and experiment with different programs and content that I would try. I created a terrain with a soundscape audio file that I made in Ableton.

I was inspired by Laurie Anderson Interview: A Virtual Reality of Stories. The immersiveness of the game world intrigues me and is a space that I enjoy working in. I am a firm believer of transforming spaces and creating emotive experiences for the viewer. Gaming has always been close to my heart, I believe it offers a way for us to experience life without going through the mundane of it all.

SP18 - EDPX 5100 – Grad Critique – Week 8

I have been working on developing a game that is inspired by internal mental struggles. The unity game is called Cognitive Distortions and is about exploring a landscape within the mind. I composed the music for the unity game and designed the various landscapes within the game itself.  The terrains are Las Cruces, NM, El Paso, TX, and Sierra Blanca, TX. The player explores the landscape triggering music that guides the narrative along with their journey. Mental Illness is a prominent issue within our society, the issues stem from stigma surrounding those who suffer from their disability. I created this game to imitate the relationship I have with the thoughts that stem from my lived experiences and to provide an awareness of an invisible struggle.

SP18 - EDPX 5100 – Grad Critique – WEEK 10 (FINAL)

My Creative Praxis consists of an exploration of identity and survival. Most of my work is comprised of the inner psyche and the manifestation of memories from lived experiences. Questions such as, “What makes a person who they are?” are present in my work throughout my creative process. There is an exploration of how initial building blocks of childhood definitions breakdown as adulthood takes on a new form of identification for a person. There is also the exploration of how some of those initial building blocks remain how what it means to define your thought process around old lessons of thinking and being that remain. I identify as a queer, brown person with a disability. Often my work revolves around exploring the cognitive dysfunctions and manipulations that my mind will wander through. I intend to bring the participant of my work into my psyche. There are a shift and a manifestation that my work will go through. I strive to create a fantastical world full of mystery and mysticism with some brujeria mixed into it. I am from a small town in Texas, my family consists of Catholic rituals with curandera influence. The exploration of technology through my work has made the magical sense of religious mysticism and realism collide. As a child, I spent most of my time alone in the desert mixing imaginary memories with factual ones. The isolation of the desert and the darkness of the night sky are still a major inspiration for me. Although the process in which my work exists has evolved, these attributes remain true in my work.

SP18 - EDPX 5100 – Grad Critique – Week 5 Major Work #1

My major work consisted of a live performance, that compiled these sound clips together as well as the video which played in the background.

After performing I realized that I will need more control of the content that I am streaming behind me, and I will need to be able to see the video footage as I am cueing it up.

I also learned that it is a good idea to have different variations of the songs as well as more options for sound depending on the mood.

The next variation of this will adopt these aspects.

SP18 - EDPX 5100 – Grad Critique – Week 4 Major Work #1 (Progress)

My progress for my major work consists of an original 3D animation that consists of a black sea. I wanted to explore different modes of visual animation and video. I collected sounds that I have included in some audio and took various shots of video around my neighborhood.

I am not entirely happy with the visual aspect of the project, I can't seem to get the shots that I want and I feel that creating the images myself through a a 3D animation program would serve in my best interest.

I am planning to perform live, however I do not know what that will look like exactly.

To be continued...

SP18 - EDPX 5100 – Grad Critique – Week 3 Exploratory Work #1

For my Experimental Project #1 I wanted to focus on a soundscape. I have been wanting experiment with sound and how emotive it can be.

I have always had a difficult time expressing myself with words and detailing to someone how I felt, music has always been a way to communicate with a friend or a significant other.

I decided on Abelton because it has a reputation of being user friendly and a solid program. Through this project I discovered the freedom that sounds can give an artist. The freedom to speak without words.

SP18 - EDPX 5100 – Grad Critique – Week 1 (Ideas)

The first week of the semester starts off with research on how I want to spend the next 10 weeks of my creative life. As I find my way through Grad School I have discovered many forms of technology that can help execute ideas in many different ways. I want to focus on sound and dive into Unity, but exploring how I got to this point first is priority.
